Inspired by a Canadian gem.

This month I had a Canadian composer visit my students and the students of a colleague. Tyler Seidenberg was born in Oakville and while in highschool began a compositional journey that culminated in a series of  solos/duets for piano. His work is both interesting  and challenging for the growing musician.  I often hear “sweet” from students during an intro to one of Ty’s pieces.  At 23 years of age,  he has become a hero in my studio – inspiring young musicians to work hard, enjoy their music making and helping them to understand why learning the technical requirements and theory are so important.

In between energetic performances and improvisations, Tyler talked to my students about composing and how through some simple steps and the music skills they had already acquired (and would be acquiring in the future) they too, could “speak” through music. He discussed the similarities between music of Mozart and the pop music of today.

Tyler’s charismatic nature, his sense of humour and passion for music were infectious and his message has been reverberating through my studio since workshop day. My students were both inspired and motivated. Thank you Tyler for sharing your talent with us!

Watch for Ty’s pieces in the Canadian National Conservatory of Music’s Northern Lights series or visit tysolos.com to check out the Ty Solos series.
